It took me FOREVER to figure out a name for my blog spot. Seriously, forever. Maybe normal people don't over analyze as much as I do. Something as simple as the title of my blog made me frustrated.
So here it is: "The White Album"
And here's why:
The Beatles was an album put out by The Beatles in the late 60's. Yoko Ono made her first connections with John during the production on this album. Eric Clapton makes a guest appearance playing guitar in "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." The original version of my favorite Beatles' song is on this album: "Revolution 1." There are ballads like "Julia" and just straight up crazy songs like "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da."
A very common nickname for this album is "The White Album" simply because the album itself is almost completely white. Search "The White Album" on google images and you'll see what I mean. I admire this simple detail about the album. It's almost the opposite of advertising. It's plain, simple and ...white. But at the same time it's eye catching and makes you think "why?"
Ok, now search "the Pussycat Dolls new album" on google images. What you should see is five very beautiful young women sitting on motorcycles and wearing clothes straight out of a Victoria's Secret runway show.
This is definition of advertising. When I see this I think "wow those girls look pretty bad ass on their motorcycles" "shouldn't they be wearing helmets or something" and "they are all so beautiful so maybe they will have great music too." I don't ask "why?" because I already know why. The more eyeliner they put on and clothes they take off the more CD's are sold. Don't get me wrong some of their music is pretty catchy but these girls are painted, plucked and polished to perfection.
So how did The Beatles make their "White Album" the 10th greatest albums of all time (Rollingstone's words excatly). They made us ask "why?" They dipped their feet in new and interesting styles. They produced quality music, not quality images. One is a tangible object that can be charished, the other is just an illusion.
I have to think about this concept often becuase im about to dive into the music industry. I need to get straight what I believe about the industry and study album's like The Beatles to filter out the illusions
During the recording of this album, John, Paul, Ringo and George had to work a few issues. Well, lots of issues. Ringo walked out a few times, John disputing Paul's song writting, Paul disputing John's song writting, the death of their manager, a brand new record label. All of these things could have split the band up for good but they worked through it to produce one of the greatest records of all time.
"The White Album" is like a little metaphor for life. We have to work with the struggles to find the beauty they produce.
I told you I over analyze.
